English
The English curriculum is centred around developing competent and confident communicators who leave with strong examination results in English Language and English Literature.
The English department promotes the habit of reading widely and often, covering a broad range of diverse and challenging fiction and non-fiction texts, to create life-long readers for both pleasure and information. Students learn to be equipped to independently analyse and critically interpret a range of texts across genres and forms. Students gain a deep knowledge and understanding of relevant social, historical, biographical and literary contexts and how they influence the construction and reception of texts.
Our curriculum provides many opportunities for extended writing on a wide range of challenging topics for a variety of genres and forms. We encourage creativity when writing to express ideas, opinions and feelings with clarity and accuracy.
Oracy and self-expression are integral to our curriculum and promote critical thinking to allow students to articulate their own viewpoints whilst engaging sensitively with the perspectives of others.
We are committed to equipping all our students with the skills needed to pursue careers that require a high proficiency in English.
